About Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)

NEMT services are provided to Optima Health Members who require transportation assistance to approved healthcare appointments. Verida arranges transportation for all Optima Health Members residing in counties located throughout Virginia.

Call Verida to arrange NEMT services to covered medical appointments at least five (5) business days in advance of the appointment date. You can schedule up to 30 business days in advance.

Making Transportation Arrangements

When scheduling transportation, please have the following information ready for the Customer Service Representative when calling: 

 

  • Member’s full name, phone number, address, date of birth, and county of residence
  • Member’s Subscriber ID as it appears on their insurance card, or member’s name and date of birth
  • Specify any special needs (oxygen, escort) when scheduling the appointment
  • An emergency contact’s name and phone number
  • Destination information – address, phone number, doctor’s name, type of appointment, and name of the medical facility
  • Member’s mobility status (walking, wheelchair, or stretcher)

Where’s My Ride?

Call our toll-free Where’s My Ride line at 1-877-892-3986, #1 (Optima Community Care) or 1-866-381-4860, #1 (Optima Medicare HMO), if you have waited more than 15 minutes after your scheduled pick-up time.

NEMT is a service that is provided to Optima Health members who require transportation assistance to Medicaid-billable healthcare services and have no other means of transportation.

How do I apply for Non-Emergency Medical Transportation?

Contact the Medicaid office in your county/region to apply for Medicaid or to find out more about NEMT.

How is transportation determined?

Verida arranges transportation for all Optima Health members residing in counties located in Virginia. Call the Verida at 877-892-3986 (Optima Family Care) or 855-325-7558 (Optima Community Care).

Does Verida provide private transportation to appointments?

Since this is a shared-ride service, it is possible that you will ride with other passengers picked up at or near your pick-up location. Verida offers public transportation vouchers and fuel/gas reimbursement as an alternative.

Are there limits to how far I can travel to and from a medical appointment?

Transportation is available to services in the your home community. Travel outside your home community is available only when those specialized services are not available within your home community.

Am I allowed to bring shopping bags on the vehicle?

You are only able to carry one bag onto the vehicle. The bag must fit on your lap…no exceptions.

Am I allowed to take a friend or family member to appointments?

You are allowed one adult escort/attendant to accompany you on your trip to provide assistance if you have a medical need. Upon scheduling transportation, please inform the Verida customer service representative that an adult escort/attendant will be accompanying you on your trip

To schedule transportation, you should book at least three (3) business days in advance of the appointment date. You may book up to 30 business days in advance.

Are members allowed to schedule transportation to and from non-medical appointments?

Transportation is provided to and from medical appointments only. Some of which may be considered covered or non-covered as determined by Optima Family Care and Optima Community Care.

What type of information is required to schedule transportation to an appointment?

  • Member’s Medicaid number as it appears on their Optima Health Medicaid card, or member’s social security number and date of birth
